13 Arrested in Assam Over Alleged Assault on Bihu Performers, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Orders Action
SRIBHUMI, October 25, 2026 [VoM News]: Thirteen people have been arrested following an alleged assault on members of a Bihu troupe during a Durga Puja idol immersion procession in Assam’s Sribhumi district, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directing police to take strict action against those involved.
The incident reportedly took place on Saturday night during a procession organised by Hindustan Club in Sribhumi town, where the Bihu performers had been invited to perform.

Videos circulating on social media purportedly show performers with visible injuries, while some footage appears to depict bamboo sticks being used during the confrontation. The circumstances that triggered the violence remain unclear.
Initial media reports suggested the dispute may have involved objections to the playing of Assamese songs in the Barak Valley. Allegations that traditional Bihu instruments were damaged have also surfaced, but these claims have not been independently verified.
Condemning the incident on Sunday, Sarma said an attack on Bihu performers would not be tolerated and directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to act against those responsible.

“Bihu is the soul of Assam, our pride and our identity. We will never tolerate any insult to our culture and heritage,” the Chief Minister wrote on X.
The Assam DGP subsequently confirmed that a case had been registered at Sribhumi Police Station and 13 people arrested. He said the accused had been forwarded to court and efforts were underway to identify and apprehend other alleged participants.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
