Iran rejects nuclear enrichment demands, rejects US peace offer, as Putin offers diplomatic support

TEHRAN, October 9, 2026 [VoM News]: Iran is considering a U.S.-proposed way to de-escalate the current conflict in the Middle East while leaving the matter of uranium enrichment unresolved and indicating it is prepared for a prolonged conflict, top Iranian officials said on Wednesday.

“Tehran will reply to Washington’s new offers in the coming days, which were made through the mediators,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, giving a nod toward the ongoing indirect talks.

Iran had already offered their proposal, known as a seven-day plan, and were looking at the American reaction, Araghchi said before determining their next course of action.

The comments suggest that there is still diplomatic interaction in spite of the unresolved issue of conditions to end the conflict.

Iran refuses to give up uranium enrichment demand

At the same time, Mohammad Eslami, the head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, responded to calls on Iran to abandon uranium enrichment, or give up nuclear material stockpiles it already has.

Uranium enrichment is an integral component of Iran’s nuclear programme and the U.S. demand was nothing but “deception and lies”, according to Eslami.

His comments underscored an important rift between Tehran and Washington, which are attempting to broker a negotiated settlement.

Russia extends its support to the resolution of the conflict.Russia is supporting efforts to put an end to the conflict.

It also came as Moscow was discussing ways to help end the war with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and expressed Moscow’s readiness to support diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

Pezeshkian has been told that Putin offered to “do everything in our power” to help put the conflict to an end.

The reported remarks also said the Iranian president was doing serious work to come up with a settlement.

Explosions reported in Strait of Hormuz

Meanwhile, separately, Iranian media reported on strong explosions in the Strait of Hormuz in the south, adding to fresh worries over shipping security in the strategically vital shipping route.

Oil tankers en route that were travelling through routes deemed as unauthorised have been said to have collided with sea mines in Iran by the Fars News Agency citing unnamed military sources.

The circumstances of the reported explosions, whether or not mines were involved and whether or not damage was done to vessels, have not been substantiated independently.

The Strait of Hormuz is still a vital international energy channel, while any changes in shipping impact the energy trade and oil supply routes to and from the area.

Iran’s military forces have indicated further preparations to boost their capability.

Iranian defence sources have also cited the country’s ability to produce more domestic weapons as proof of the country’s self-reliance to continue military operations.

The remarks coincide with Tehran’s ongoing efforts at indirectly trying to reach the Western powers while making public claims that it will not give in to pressure on its military and nuclear assets.

In the absence of a final peace agreement, there is no word on the matter, and they are still far apart when it comes to nuclear enrichment, security guarantees and how to end the hostilities.
