Three NDA Allies Seek Election Commission of India Clarification Over SIR Row, Stress Public Trust

NEW DELHI, September 26, 2026 [VoM News]: Three BJP allies in the National Democratic Alliance, including LJP (Ram Vilas), Telugu Desam Party and Rashtriya Lok Morcha have called on the Election Commission of India to clarify concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, stressing the need to maintain public confidence in the electoral process.

The calls came after an investigation by The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally objected at least 14 times over the past 10 months to decisions and orders they said were issued without their knowledge. The reported objections concerned issues including changes to voter registration Form 6, additions and deletions from electoral rolls and control over the electoral roll database.

Union Minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan said he was neither defending the Election Commission nor endorsing allegations made by the Opposition, but argued that the poll body should address doubts among the public.

“If people start losing trust in the electoral system, that will not augur well for democracy,” Paswan said, adding that the Election Commission should “dispel misgivings in the minds of the people.”

TDP Lok Sabha floor leader Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu said the SIR exercise had been conducted transparently in Andhra Pradesh. At the same time, he said questions raised about a constitutional institution carrying such an important democratic responsibility should be addressed through appropriate clarification and transparency to strengthen public confidence.

Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief and Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha also sought an immediate clarification from the Election Commission, saying the controversy surrounding the SIR had created confusion among the public and that the actual position needed to be explained.

The remarks put three NDA constituents LJP (Ram Vilas), TDP and RLM on record seeking greater clarity from the Election Commission amid the controversy.

The Election Commission, responding to The Indian Express report, said differing views and observations were a normal part of institutional deliberations and maintained that its final decisions over the past year had been unanimous.

Meanwhile, Opposition parties have stepped up pressure on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar following the report, including demands for his removal and scrutiny of decisions related to the SIR.
