Pakistani Journalist Wajahat S. Khan Claims Military Sources Said ‘Imran Khan May Not Be Alive’
Islamabad, Aug. 12 [VoM News]: Rumours about the health of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in detention have led to intense political discussion, as Khan’s family and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf(PTI) call for his access to medical treatment and deny the rumours about his illness.
It all started when veteran Pakistani journalist Wajahat S. Khan made a statement in the form of a vlog in which he mentioned that three military officers from the Pakistan Army GHQ informed him that imran Khan “possibly is not alive.” Khan admitted that he could not verify his sources himself and was merely repeating the claim.
The statements on Twitter draws the considerable debate. Wajahat S. Khan is considered by some to be a journalist who has had long-term access to Pakistan’s military powers because of his experience covering national security issues, though others disagree.
In response, Imran’s sister Aleema Khan dismissed the reports, stating, the family adheres to a strict policy of only discussing his condition with his own doctor and family. She accused opponents of trying to create a conspiracy theory and warned others not to spread false information. She also recalled that Imran had previously made a statement that if anything happened to him in jail, then the responsibility lay with Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Another sister, Dr. Uzma Khan, denied reports that Khan’s blood pressure had climbed dangerously high or that his medication had been upped, asserting that family members had also gone to his long-time physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan, who advised them that the reports ‘weren’t medically accurate’. Dr Uzma also stated that the family still needs a full medical check-up to be done, more so as Khan was reporting problems with his eye.
PTI has also issued a statement vehemently condemning Imran Khan’s health and detention, stating that he has not been allowed to meet members of his family, lawyer or the doctors he is familiar with. PTI has called for him to be granted access to his family and lawyer and to be taken for a medical examination in a transparent manner.
The PTI leaders including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Sohail Afridi has also said that the authorities are responsible for Khan’s safety and health in the prison. In another incident, the PTI leaders and supporters including PTI party workers in London have been organizing protests for Khan’s release and free access to medical facilities.
The discussion arises as Khan has been in detention for a long time with PTI regularly referring to a 2024 opinion of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention which found his detention arbitrary and recommended remedy action by the Pakistani government.
Until the time of publishing this information, the Government of Pakistan, prison authorities or any independent authority has not issued any statements or denied the information provided by journalist Wajahat S. Khan. All such information remains unconfirmed.
