Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Silencing Opposition Ahead of Lok Sabha Election
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government, alleging that the party was engaged in an effort to stifle all opposition voices in the run-up to the next Lok Sabha election. She claimed that the BJP’s intention was to apprehend opposition leaders before the polls to clear the political landscape for themselves.
Banerjee made these allegations while addressing reporters at the state secretariat ‘Nabanna.’ Her statement comes in the midst of a series of raids by central agencies on opposition leaders in various states. The Chief Minister’s remarks also stemmed from the recent summons issued to Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an ongoing probe into the Delhi excise policy case.
However, Banerjee expressed satisfaction with the Election Commission’s decision to approve the name “INDIA Alliance” for the opposition coalition. She congratulated the Election Commission for making a bold decision and emphasized the significance of the alliance in the upcoming elections.
The Election Commission of India clarified its stance on political alliances in response to a plea against the use of the INDIA acronym for the alliance of opposition parties. The ECI asserted its role as the authority responsible for the conduct of elections and stated that it cannot regulate political alliances.
Meanwhile, Raghav Chadha, a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accused the central government of devising a scheme to arrest top leaders of the Opposition INDIA alliance. He asserted that the first arrest under this scheme would target Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Chadha argued that the ruling BJP’s fear of potential losses in the upcoming Lok Sabha election led to a strategy aimed at implicating the alliance’s top leaders and incarcerating them.
Chadha pointed out the strategic advantage the BJP would gain from the absence of top opposition leaders during election campaigns, potentially securing a victory for the ruling party. These allegations highlight the heightened political tensions and the strategic maneuvering leading up to the Lok Sabha election.
