INDIA Bloc to Decide Prime Ministerial Face if Elected in 2024 Lok Sabha Polls
In a significant development, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge revealed that the members of the INDIA bloc, a coalition of 28 political parties, will convene to determine the Prime Ministerial candidate if they secure victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Kharge made this announcement during his interaction with reporters in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma. The INDIA bloc has been formed to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming elections, but the alliance is yet to reach a consensus on its Prime Ministerial nominee.
Kharge emphasized that the decision on the Prime Ministerial face would be made collectively by the coalition partners after the elections. This move underlines the commitment of the INDIA bloc to a unified front while allowing for flexibility in choosing the leader who can best represent the alliance at the national level.
Congress’ Plans for Chhattisgarh Assembly Polls and Beyond
Regarding the Chhattisgarh assembly polls, Kharge expressed confidence in the Congress’s prospects, stating, “We will cross 75 seats, not less than that.” He outlined some of the party’s key promises, including providing free education from primary to post-graduation and distributing cylinders to women. Notably, Kharge indicated that the elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) would decide the Chief Ministerial candidate, reflecting a commitment to a democratic process within the party.
Kharge also took the opportunity to criticize the BJP during a public gathering in Sukma, accusing them of deceiving the public by playing the caste and religion card. He emphasized the Congress’s contributions to the empowerment of backward classes and its role in developing the country’s infrastructure, including schools, public sectors, banks, and industries.
The upcoming Chhattisgarh elections are scheduled to be held in two phases on November 7 and 17, with the vote counting slated for December 3. In the 2018 assembly polls, the Congress secured a landslide victory, winning 68 out of 90 seats, which underscores the party’s hopes of repeating its success in the upcoming elections.
