7.7 Magnitude earthquake in Myanmar; 144 Killed
SRINAGAR: At least 144 people have been killed and 730 injured after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread destruction in several cities, officials confirmed.
With its epicentre near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, the quake hit at midday, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock. The full scale of casualties and damage remains unclear, particularly as Myanmar grapples with an ongoing civil war and restricted information flow.
Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, announced the death toll is expected to rise, as rescue efforts continue. Images from the capital, Naypyidaw, showed collapsed buildings that housed civil servants, with emergency teams pulling survivors from the rubble.
Authorities reported a high demand for blood donations in the worst-hit areas. The earthquake also caused major infrastructure damage, including cracked roads, collapsed highways, and the destruction of a bridge and a dam, raising concerns over access to affected regions.
