47 Opposition MPs Suspended for “Misconduct” in Parliament’s Winter Session
In a significant move, a total of forty-seven Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) faced suspension for the remaining period of the winter session due to their alleged “misconduct” and failure to comply with the Chair’s directives. This motion was proposed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.
The suspension was a result of what was perceived as the members’ disregard for rules and norms of the House, including actions such as displaying placards and being named by the Chair for disruptive behavior.
Pralhad Joshi stated the specific names of the MPs in question, moving a resolution under Rule 374(2) for their suspension. While 31 MPs received immediate suspension for the rest of the Winter Session, three others faced suspension pending the Privileges Committee’s report. This latter group had climbed on the Speaker’s podium to raise slogans.
The issue involving the suspension of Lok Sabha MPs Abdul Khaliq, Vijay Vasanth, and K Jeyakumar was referred to the Privileges Committee for further examination and action.
Amid ongoing protests by opposition members regarding Parliament’s security breach on December 13, Lok Sabha was adjourned for the next session. The opposition has been pressing for a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the security breach incident.
Rajya Sabha also experienced repeated adjournments due to the same issue.
Previously, on December 14, following the Parliament’s security breach, 13 Lok Sabha MPs and one Rajya Sabha MP had faced suspension due to their alleged “unruly conduct” within the Parliament premises.
Among the suspended members were Manickam Tagore, Kanimozhi, PR Natrajan, VK Sreekandan, Benny Bahanan, K Subramanyam, S Venkatesan, Mohammad Jawed, and Derek O’Brien from Trinamool Congress, who was the sole MP suspended from the Rajya Sabha.
