33% Women-Reservation in J-k Assembly: Positive Reactions from Local Women Leaders
The Indian government is poised to present a bill in Parliament on Tuesday, aiming to provide a 33 percent reservation for women in the Legislative Assembly of the Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory.
The bill, titled “The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill-2023,” was approved by Parliament during a special session held in September of this year. This session was convened specifically to address the issue of women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Notably, the previous amendment did not extend to Jammu & Kashmir and the Union Territory.The move has received positive reactions from women leaders in Jammu & Kashmir.

Shamima Firdous, the President of the National Conference (NC) Women’s wing, expressed her approval, stating that it is a welcome initiative that will contribute to addressing the concerns and issues affecting women more effectively.Syed Asiya Naqash, a former minister and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), affirmed her party’s longstanding support for women’s reservation.
While welcoming the decision to provide a 33 percent reservation for women, she emphasized the importance of such decisions being made by the elected representatives of Jammu and Kashmir.Kaneez Fatima, a leader of the Peoples Conference (PC), highlighted the significance of political reservation as a significant stride toward the empowerment of women in Jammu & Kashmir.
The general sentiment among women leaders from the region is one of appreciation for the move towards greater gender representation in political bodies.
