11 Earthquakes Hit J-k and Ladakh in 24 Hours: Experts Optimistic About Low-Intensity Tremors

In the span of 24 hours, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh experienced a series of 11 earthquakes and aftershocks, raising concerns among locals. However, experts suggest that the prevalence of low-intensity tremors may be a positive sign, potentially reducing the likelihood of a more severe earthquake.

On a single Monday afternoon, a sequence of five consecutive earthquakes jolted J&K and Ladakh, followed by two aftershocks later in the evening, bringing the total to seven tremors within the day. Additionally, four more earthquakes occurred in the morning, reaching a total of 11 within the 24-hour timeframe. Authorities attribute the epicenter of these earthquakes to Zanskar, Kargil, and Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir.

The initial earthquake, registering a magnitude of 3.0, struck the region at 3:57 AM, followed by a second quake with a magnitude of 3.4 at 10:30 AM. Subsequent earthquakes measuring 2.9 and 2.8 occurred at 11:18 AM and 11:28 AM, respectively.

Despite the heightened seismic activity, experts advise the public to adopt precautionary measures and remain calm. Dr. Rakesh Chandra, a Senior Assistant Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, Kashmir University, reassures that the experienced tremors are a normal occurrence. He highlights that Zanskar, Kargil, and Kishtwar fall under zone five, the most earthquake-prone areas. Dr. Chandra suggests that the low-intensity tremors are beneficial as they gradually release accumulated energy, potentially averting a major earthquake.

“We need to perceive the earthquakes and aftershocks positively and implement precautionary measures, such as constructing homes based on seismically approved designs, to minimize potential losses,” advises Dr. Chandra.

Professor Shakil Romshoo, an earth scientist and Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), emphasizes the collective responsibility in disaster preparedness, particularly for earthquakes, given the historical vulnerability of the region.

“As individuals, communities, society, or part of the government, we must collaborate to reduce our vulnerability and risk to earthquakes,” urges Professor Romshoo.
