Youth killed, 6 missing after flash floods triggered by cloudburst in Ramban
Key Highlights:
- A cloudburst in Ramban triggered a flash flood, leaving one dead and six missing.
- The remote location and hostile weather hampered rescue efforts.
- Victims include children, with several family members missing and presumed dead.
A devastating cloudburst struck the mountainous district of Ramban, Jammu, on August 26, leading to a flash flood that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man and left six others, including four children, missing. The incident occurred in the remote areas of Rajgarh, Kumate, Dhraman, and Halla, where several hamlets were severely impacted.
The deceased was identified as Yassir Ahmed, son of Bhag Din, a resident of Gadigram, Rajgarh. His mother, Naseema Begum, and his sister, Shazia Banoo, were among the missing.
Also missing are Gulshan Begum and her two children, Khalid Hussain and Seerat Banoo, along with another child, Shazia Banoo, from a different family in Rajgarh.
The tragedy unfolded when the victims’ homes, located along the banks of a rivulet, were washed away by the swollen waters.
Despite immediate rescue efforts by the district administration, led by SSP Ramban, Kulbir Singh, and supported by local police, the operation faced significant challenges. The tough terrain, continuous rainfall, and the swollen rivulet hindered progress.
Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Baseer-ul-Haq Chaudhary, confirmed that the rescue operation, which was halted due to deteriorating weather and difficult terrain, will resume tomorrow, weather permitting. He noted that it took rescue teams 2-3 hours to reach the remote site due to the lack of road connectivity.
In addition to the loss of life, the flash flood also washed away a residential house, damaged several schools, and destroyed two parked vehicles in the area. The full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.
