Youth Drowns in Lidder River While Bathing in Pahalgam

A tragic incident unfolded in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, on Monday when a young man from north Kashmir’s Sopore drowned in the Lidder River. The deceased has been identified as Basit Ahmad Bhat, a 21-year-old resident of Sopore and son of Gh Rasool Bhat.
According to an official report, Basit was bathing in the Lidder River near Langalbal Pahalgam when the incident occurred. Despite his attempts to stay afloat, he was quickly overpowered by the river’s strong currents and went under.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was promptly alerted and launched a rescue operation. They managed to retrieve Basit from the water and rushed him to the sub-district hospital in Pahalgam.
Unfortunately, despite the medical team’s best efforts, Basit could not be revived and was declared dead shortly after arrival.
The news of Basit’s untimely demise has sent shockwaves through his hometown of Sopore, where he was well-known and loved by many. Family members, friends, and residents are mourning the loss of a young life cut short.
The local authorities have assured that further proceedings in this regard have been taken up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
Incidents like this highlight the inherent dangers of swimming in natural water bodies, especially in areas with strong currents and unpredictable conditions.
