West Bengal Urges Urgent SC Hearing Against CBI Probe Order in Sandeshkhali Case
The West Bengal government has urgently sought a hearing in the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court’s order directing a CBI probe into the Sandeshkhali matter. This case involves an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali on January 5, 2024. Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi emphasized the urgency, citing the interim order’s overnight compliance demand. The Supreme Court bench, led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, directed Singhvi to approach the Chief Justice of India for listing the plea. The West Bengal government had moved the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court’s order on Tuesday.
CBI Probe into Sandeshkhali Matter Challenged by West Bengal
The Calcutta High Court had earlier transferred the Sandeshkhali case, related to the attack on ED officials, to the CBI. In January 2024, ED officials were attacked in the North 24 Parganas district while en route to raid the homes of former Bongaon Municipality chairman Shankar Adhya and Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan. The West Bengal government’s plea challenging the CBI probe direction was presented before the Supreme Court bench by Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
TMC Leader Arrested in Connection with Sandeshkhali Case
On February 29, the West Bengal police arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan, linked to the Sandeshkhali case. Following the arrest, West Bengal’s Basirhat Court remanded Shahjahan to 10-day police custody. The opposition BJP alleged that Shahjahan was kept under state police “hospitality” to evade arrest by the ED and the CBI. The Sandeshkhali case had heightened tensions, with women on the island accusing Shahjahan of sexual abuse and other offenses, leading to public protests.
