West Bengal DGP Assures Action Amidst Unrest in Sandeshkhali
West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar pledged a thorough investigation into the unrest in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district. After spending the night in the troubled area, Kumar affirmed the police’s commitment to address complaints and take strict action against those found guilty, especially in cases involving the torture of women.
Hands-On Assessment: DGP Kumar’s Visit to Troubled Areas
In his first visit since the protests began, DGP Rajeev Kumar conducted a comprehensive assessment by meeting with key police officers, including ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar and Basirhat Police District SP Hasan Mehedi Rehman. He also visited adjoining islands like Situlia, Sardarpara, and Manipur to gain firsthand insights into the prevailing situation.
NHRC Involvement: Special Team to Investigate Allegations
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken note of the situation, issuing notices to Bengal’s chief secretary BP Gopalika and DGP Rajeev Kumar. A special NHRC team has been constituted to investigate allegations of sexual violence and land grabbing, with a scheduled visit to Sandeshkhali to assess the situation.
Official Inquiries: NHRC Seeks Reports from Bengal Authorities
The NHRC’s notices demand reports from Bengal authorities, including the chief secretary and DGP, within four weeks. This move underscores the urgency to address and rectify incidents of violence in Sandeshkhali, ensuring accountability for crimes committed during the unrest.
