Thiruvananthapuram, September 11, 2023: Kerala’s Minister for Ports, Ahamed Devarkovil, has announced that the first ship carrying cranes from China will dock at Vizhinjam Port on October 4. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister for Ports Sarbananda Sonowal will participate in a function to receive the ship at the Adani-run Vizhinjam Port.
Minister Devarkovil further revealed that three more ships will arrive at Vizhinjam, with one scheduled for October and two in November following the arrival of the first ship. The Vizhinjam Port, under construction at an estimated cost of Rs 7,700 crore, is expected to be commissioned by May next year. Adani Ports Private Ltd has committed to completing all the works by December this year.
He noted that 75% of the breakwater construction is also complete and highlighted that Vizhinjam is the only port in India offering more than 20 meters of depth without dredging, making it closer to the International Maritime Channel.
Rajesh Jha, MD and CEO of Adani Ports Private Ltd, stated that the port would handle all international cargo transshipment to India, making it one of the world’s largest ports. The project faced delays due to land acquisition issues and opposition from local fishermen concerned about its impact on their livelihoods.
On September 20, Chief Minister Vijayan will unveil the logo and name of Vizhinjam Port at an event in Thiruvananthapuram. The port’s development follows a public-private partnership model, with the Adani Group serving as the private partner.
