Virat Kohli Sets Record, India Suffers Defeat in 1st Test Against South Africa

Amidst India’s crushing defeat to South Africa in the 1st Test, Virat Kohli made history by becoming the first batter to achieve 2000 runs in seven different calendar years. Despite India’s struggle, Kohli’s resilient performance shone as he notched up 76 runs off 82 balls, surpassing the 2000-run mark for the seventh year in 2023.

Dean Elgar’s exceptional 185 and South Africa’s lethal pace attack led by Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Nandre Burger contributed to India’s downfall within just three days. Rohit Sharma’s struggles against Rabada continued as the pace bowler’s delivery shattered Sharma’s stumps, marking the skipper’s seventh dismissal in 11 innings against Rabada.

The Indian batting lineup faced further setbacks with Shubman Gill’s dismissal by Marco Jansen after a promising start and the subsequent quick removals of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul by the South African bowlers. Ravichandran Ashwin was sent packing for a duck, further sealing India’s fate in the match.

Jasprit Bumrah’s runout and a well-judged review from South Africa that saw Mohammed Siraj dismissed compounded India’s woes. Despite Kohli’s commendable effort, his departure, courtesy of Jansen, eventually marked the conclusion of India’s struggle within the truncated three-day game.

While Kohli’s milestone was a bright spot amidst India’s defeat, South Africa’s dominant display, led by their bowlers and Dean Elgar’s stellar batting, secured a convincing win in the opening Test match of the series.
