Varanasi Court Sends Notice to Rahul Gandhi Over Alleged Remarks
A Varanasi district court has issued a notice to Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in response to a plea seeking the registration of a case against him for allegedly making inflammatory statements during his visit to the United States.
The plea was filed by Nageshwar Mishra, a former village head of Tilmapur in Varanasi. Mishra alleged that during Gandhi’s US visit, he made remarks claiming that Sikhs in India feel insecure, are deprived of their right to wear turbans and kara, and are restricted from entering gurdwaras. Mishra further claimed that these comments were endorsed by Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and were part of a conspiracy to incite civil unrest in the country.
District Judge Sanjeev Pandey has scheduled a hearing for February 25 and has directed both the Uttar Pradesh government and Rahul Gandhi to submit their responses. The notice was issued on Thursday.
Mishra had previously filed a similar plea in a lower court, which was dismissed on November 28, 2024. Dissatisfied with the ruling, he approached the district judge through his lawyer, seeking a reconsideration of the matter.
The case has sparked political discussions, with Congress yet to issue an official response.
