In a clear directive, United World Wrestling (UWW) President Nenad Lalovic emphasized to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) that athlete registration must be exclusively conducted by the federation. This communication comes amid the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)-appointed ad-hoc panel’s scheduled trials for the selection of Indian wrestlers.

Trials Schedule Announced by Ad-hoc Committee

The Ad-hoc Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had announced trial dates for the selection of Indian wrestlers for the upcoming Asian Championships and Olympic Games qualifiers. The trials, organized by the Ad-hoc Committee, are scheduled for March 10 and 11, encompassing various categories for men and women.

    UWW’s Reminder on Affiliation Principles

In a letter addressed to WFI’s suspended president Sanjay Singh, UWW Chief Lalovic reiterated the principles concerning the registration of athletes and delegations in international competitions. The UWW, having lifted the suspension on WFI in February, emphasized that only UWW-affiliated national federations have the authority to register teams for international competitions.

The letter stated, “The registration can be made only by the UWW-affiliated national federations, using the competition administration system (‘Athena’) exclusively, under the rules and deadlines provided by our regulations.”

This communication clarifies the process and underscores the adherence to UWW regulations, highlighting the autonomy and responsibilities of national federations in team selection and registration for international events.
