UT Level Steering Committee Formed for Implementation of New Criminal Laws
To ensure the successful implementation of new Criminal Laws in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, the Administration has established a UT Level Steering Committee.
Key Responsibilities and Composition
Under the leadership of the Chief Secretary, JK, the committee will be tasked with formulating a time-bound roadmap for the effective implementation of three new laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshaya Abhiniyam (BSA), 2023. This roadmap aims to be finalized well in advance of the enforcement date, which is scheduled for July 1, 2024.
The committee will comprise key stakeholders including the Principal Secretary of the Home Department, the Director General of Police (or their representative not below the rank of ADGP), the Director General of Police (Prisons), the Director General of Prosecution, the Secretary of the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, a Judicial Officer nominated by the Department of Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs in consultation with the High Court of JK and Ladakh, and the Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory, JK.
Ensuring Smooth Implementation
With the Chief Secretary at the helm, the committee aims to streamline efforts and resources to ensure the effective execution of the new criminal laws across the Union Territory of JK. By fostering collaboration among key stakeholders and adhering to a structured timeline, the committee endeavors to uphold the principles of justice and security within the region.
