UPI Payments Now Accepted in UAE Through Network International Partnership
Key Highlights:
- UPI payments will be accepted in the UAE via Network International’s 2,00,000 POS terminals.
- Indian tourists and NRIs can make secure payments by scanning QR codes at major establishments.
- UPI is also available in Nepal, Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.
QR-based Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments are now accepted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as announced by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) on Wednesday. NIPL has partnered with Network International, which facilitates digital commerce across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region. This collaboration will enable UPI payments via Network International’s over 2,00,000 point-of-sale (POS) terminals.
Indian tourists and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the UAE can now make secure payments by scanning QR codes at leading establishments such as the Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall, and other retail stores and dining outlets. Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International, remarked, “By growing UPI payment acceptance across merchants in the UAE, we are not only providing Indian travellers with a seamless and familiar payment experience, but also promoting the use of innovative digital payment solutions internationally.”
Network International supports over 60,000 merchants in sectors including retail, hospitality, transport, and supermarkets, allowing cross-border UPI payments using Indian bank accounts.
UPI is a real-time payment system launched in 2016 that simplifies and secures digital payments. It allows users to link multiple bank accounts to a mobile app and make payments using a QR code, with the option to set a PIN for each transaction or a maximum limit within which a PIN is not necessary.
Internationally, Nepal was the first country to adopt UPI payments outside of India, with Gateway Payments Service (GPS) partnering with NIPL. Recently, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and France also started accepting UPI payments. Besides the UAE, UPI is available in Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.
