UNESCO Recognizes Garba as Intangible Heritage: PM Modi Celebrates Cultural Triumph

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the recognition of ‘Garba,’ a traditional dance form of Gujarat, as an Intangible Heritage by UNESCO. The Prime Minister expressed his joy on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), stating that Garba represents a celebration of life, unity, and deep-rooted traditions. He emphasized that this global acknowledgment inspires the preservation and promotion of India’s rich heritage for future generations.

    Garba Receives UNESCO Accolade

UNESCO officially declared Garba as an Intangible Heritage during the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The decision was made at the Cresta Mowana Resort in Kasane, Botswana, during the ongoing session, which began on December 4 and will conclude on December 9. Garba, a ritualistic and devotional dance performed during the Hindu festival of Navaratri, holds cultural significance in Gujarat.

    Cultural Significance of Garba

Garba involves dancers moving around a perforated earthenware pot lit with an oil lamp or an image of the mother goddess Amba. The dance starts with slow circular movements and gradually builds up to a frenzied whirling. The practitioners and bearers of Garba include dancers, musicians, social groups, craftspeople, and religious figures involved in the festivities and preparations. UNESCO recognizes Garba’s transmission across generations in both urban and rural areas through practice, performance, imitation, and observation.

India’s Rich Cultural Tapestry on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage List

Apart from Garba, other elements from India have found a place on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These include the traditional brass and copper craft of utensil making by the Thatheras of Jandiala Guru in Punjab, the Nawrouz festival, the Kumbh Mela, the Durga Puja of Kolkata, Ramlila, and Vedic Chants.
