UN Security Council Calls for Ceasefire in Sudan During Ramadan
The United Nations Security Council has called for a ceasefire in Sudan to coincide with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, aiming to allow aid to reach the 25 million people in desperate need of food. The resolution, backed by 14 countries, urges all parties to seek a sustainable resolution through dialogue. The conflict, ongoing since April 15, 2023, involves the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, leading to widespread displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and a dire humanitarian situation.
International Call for Peace During Ramadan
The UK-proposed resolution calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities ahead of Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of allowing unhindered humanitarian access across borders and battle lines. The international community, including the African Union, supports the call for a halt to fighting during Ramadan, which begins around Monday. The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, warned that the conflict threatens Sudan’s unity and could lead to regional instability.
Conditions for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Crisis
While the Sudanese government welcomed the UN chief’s appeal, conditions were set for a ceasefire, including the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces from provinces they control. UN aid chief Martin Griffiths stressed the need to improve humanitarian access in Sudan, as half of the country’s 50 million people are in need of aid, with nearly 18 million on the brink of famine. The humanitarian response plan for Sudan in 2024 is only 4 percent funded, emphasizing the urgent need for international support.
