UN Nuclear Chief Rafael Grossi Says No Evidence of Coordinated Iranian Weapons Program
VIENNA – The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog said Monday that inspectors have found no proof of a coordinated Iranian effort to develop nuclear weapons, even as the United States and Israel have raised alarms about Tehran’s nuclear activities.
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi told NBC News that the agency has not identified “elements of a systematic and structured program to manufacture nuclear weapons” in Iran.
At the same time, Grossi confirmed that Iran has enriched uranium to 60 percent purity, a level far beyond what is needed for civilian energy purposes. “This enrichment is something only countries with nuclear weapons have,” he said.
Grossi cautioned that while inspectors cannot conclude that Iran intends to build a bomb, the accumulation of highly enriched uranium raises serious concerns. “The centrifuges were spinning constantly and producing more and more of that material,” he said. “Theoretically, this would have been enough to produce more than 10 nuclear warheads. But do they have them? No.”

He emphasized that the stockpiling of such material is the primary source of concern for the international community, noting that there is “no clear objective” for Iran to maintain enrichment at this level.
The IAEA chief’s remarks highlight the tension between diplomatic assurances and technical realities, as the global community grapples with Tehran’s nuclear ambitions amid rising regional conflict.
