Two Tankers Carrying 29 Indian Seafarers Targeted in Strait of Hormuz Attacks
MUSCAT, October 31, 2026 (VoM News): Two oil tankers carrying a total of 29 Indian seafarers were targeted in separate attacks in the Strait of Hormuz on October 29 and 30, with all crew members reported safe and uninjured, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said.
The Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MT LOUISE 1, carrying 27 Indian crew members, was targeted on Friday, according to Reuters. A small craft reportedly attached two limpet mines to the vessel’s hull, triggering explosions that caused a fire in the engine room and temporarily disabled the tanker.
The crew managed to extinguish the fire, and the vessel resumed its voyage. No environmental impact was reported. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the incident occurred about 46 kilometres northeast of Khasab, Oman.
A day earlier, the Liberia-flagged very large crude carrier MT ARZANAH, carrying two Indian nationals, was also targeted by projectiles in the waterway.
Sonowal said authorities were monitoring the situation and coordinating with the ship management companies to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers aboard both vessels.
The incidents come amid continued attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz since hostilities between the United States and Iran escalated in February.
The waterway is a critical route for global oil shipments, and repeated attacks have raised concerns over maritime security and the safety of vessels transiting the region.
