Jammu, July 25: In a significant breakthrough, police arrested two alleged overground workers (OGWs) involved in a terror attack on an army patrol in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district.

The apprehended individuals, Layaqat Ali, alias Pawu of Kalna Dhanu Parole (Billawar), and Mool Raj, alias Jenju from Bowli Mohalla (Malhar), are accused of supporting terror-related activities.

The attack, which took place on July 8 in the remote Machedi area, resulted in the martyrdom of five army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer, and injuries to five others.

According to a police spokesperson, the arrested individuals had deliberately withheld crucial information that could have helped prevent the attack.

“These individuals were found to have deliberately withheld crucial information from the police,” the spokesperson said, highlighting that the arrests mark a significant step in the ongoing efforts to counter terrorist activities in the region.

The duo has been charged under sections 61(1) (criminal conspiracy), 113 (terrorist act), 147 (waging, or attempting to wage war against the Government of India), and 150 (concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as the EIMCO (Egress and Internal Movement Control) Act at Malhar Police Station.

The spokesperson further stated that over 100 individuals have been interrogated as part of the investigation, with preventive measures taken against more than 40 others to mitigate risks and disrupt potential support systems for terrorist activities.

“The arrest of these OGWs underscores our commitment to countering terrorism,” the spokesperson added.

The arrests and ongoing investigations demonstrate the authorities’ determination to address and dismantle the networks supporting terrorism in the region.

The police continue to work diligently to prevent future attacks and ensure the safety and security of the populace.
