Turkish Parliament Approves Mecca Defence Pact With Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, Syria Expresses Interest
ANKARA, November 6, 2026 (VoM News): In a major boost and acceptance, Turkish Parliament has approved the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, with 279 votes in favour and 119 against.
A total of 398 lawmakers participated in the vote in the 592-member Turkish parliament to boost the pact which gives a collective defence framework, that, if any one faces an armed attack, the other two countries would be enable to assist with joint attacks.
Article 2 of the pact states that if a member nation faces an armed attack or military aggression, the other signatories/nations must provide immediate assistance through available mutual support measures, similarly like NATO Treaty.
Trilaterally, the nations must provide assistance to the member nation, which, however, will be subjected to the legal procedures of the nations.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had signed the pact in Mecca.
This development came at such time when renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia are taking place.
Earlier, Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler has stated that Turkey does not envisage entering a conflict with the Houthis, describing potential support as aimed at strengthening deterrence.
Meanwhile, Syria has also expressed interest in joining the pact, which though will require the approval of the pact’s signatories.
