Trump, Modi to Address Russian Oil Tariff Row, White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro Says

Trump, Modi to Address Russian Oil Tariff Row, White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro Says

Washington, Aug. 12 [VoM News]: The White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro told during a radio program on Tuesday that the issue of proposed US tariffs tied to India’s imports of Russian oil will be taken up for consideration, PTI reported.

He stated that the issue would be resolved via bilateral talks between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The comments come as U.S. Lawmakers last month approved a measure giving the president the authority to level as much as a 100 per cent tariff on each of the five largest purchasers of Russian oil to finance what America claims is Russian funding of the war in Ukraine.

Navarro said while India has not been a large buyer of Russian oil, prior to the beginning of conflict in Ukraine in 2022 but then it dramatically increased its imports since, to refine and export fuel, which he claims funds Russia’s economy indirectly.

The White House adviser stated that the problem has now since been solved. He commented that his recent op-ed for the Financial Times magazine had helped to limit India’s demand for Russian oil.

While voicing his apprehension towards the tariff issue, Navarro remained confident that he is sure to be sorted in a bilateral meeting with two leaders.

“The president and your prime minister have a very good working relationship. They are going to work that out amongst themselves,” he replied, refusing to further comment on the subject.

The move to propose a measure fortariff-sanction could see heightened scrutiny as the White House continues to exert financial pressure on nations involved in continued energy trade with Moscow amid the war in Ukraine.
