Trump Consults Advisers Over Whether Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth Should Remain Defence Secretary
WASHINGTON, November 5, 2026 (VoM News): US President Donald Trump is reportedly consulting advisers and making calls to assess whether Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth should remain in his administration following the Republican Party’s losses in the midterm elections, according to a report by CBS News.
No final decision has been made regarding a possible change in the Defence Department leadership, the report said, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
The report also suggested that Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine could face criticism over the election setback because of their roles in directing military operations against Iran.
Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday linked the Republicans’ electoral losses to the war, writing on social media that “the reason we lost is the war”. He said voters had identified ending the conflict, addressing the cost of living and inflation, prioritising American interests and changing the country’s relationship with Israel among the issues that could bring them back to the Republican Party.
Meanwhile, speculation has emerged over possible replacements for Hegseth. According to the CBS report, a person close to the discussions suggested Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a potential candidate, noting that he could secure Senate confirmation before leaving office on January 5.
Asked about replacing Hegseth, Trump dismissed the possibility and said the Defence Secretary was “doing a very good job”. He also suggested Hegseth could be popular if he pursued a vacant Senate seat in Tennessee, while saying he had not heard of such a plan.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said Trump had “full confidence” in Hegseth and defended the administration’s military operations and the secretary’s work.
Last month, Republican Representative Thomas Massie introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth, accusing him of initiating the Iran conflict without congressional authorisation.
