Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra Expelled from Lok Sabha Amid ‘Cash for Query’ Allegations
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha on Friday following a discussion on the report of the Ethics Committee regarding the ‘cash for query’ case.
Moitra, who was not permitted to speak during the House discussion, read out her statement outside the Lok Sabha, expressing dissatisfaction with the Ethics Committee’s proceedings.
The Ethics Committee’s report recommended Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha, citing “unethical conduct” and urging a legal inquiry by the central government.
Despite opposition members staging a walkout after the motion to expel Moitra was adopted, the decision was upheld by Speaker Om Birla.
Birla stated, “This House accepts the conclusions of the Committee that MP Mahua Moitra’s conduct was immoral and indecent as an MP. So, it is not appropriate for her to continue as an MP.”
The investigation into the ‘cash-for-query’ case raised questions about the procedure of the Ethics Committee and its adherence to principles of natural justice.
Congress MP Manish Tewari raised concerns about the committee’s recommendations, emphasizing that it can suggest guilt or innocence but not determine the punishment, which falls within the House’s jurisdiction.
The opposition members criticized the report’s adoption, with allegations of unfairness and lack of evidence. Moitra’s expulsion has fueled political debates, with claims of political vendetta by some opposition leaders.
