Transporters Protest Against Operation of E-Buses in Jammu
Privately owned passenger bus operators in Jammu staged a massive protest on Wednesday, opposing the operation of Smart City e-buses. The transporters, led by the All Jammu and Transporter Welfare Association, gathered in the Warehouse of Jammu city, chanting slogans against the administration for what they deemed as the ‘illegal’ running of e-bus services on various congested routes in Jammu.
Allegations Against Administration
Vijay Singh Chib, President of the association, alleged that the government had unilaterally violated the agreement between the government and transporters regarding the operation of e-buses. According to Chib, the agreement had specified that e-buses would be run on uncovered and less congested routes. However, the administration had begun operations of e-buses on all busy routes, causing hardships to private transporters.
Impact on Livelihoods
Chib emphasized that the sudden introduction of e-buses on congested routes had severely affected the livelihoods of private transporters. Many transporters, who had purchased their vehicles through loans, were now struggling to pay the monthly installments due to the loss of income caused by the operation of e-buses.
Appeal to the Administration
The bus operators appealed to the Lieutenant Governor-led administration to address the matter urgently. They stated that approximately 80 of their buses had been affected by the issue and urged the administration to consider their livelihoods while deciding on the operation of e-buses on populated routes.
