TRAI Issues Warning: Impersonation Scams Threaten Mobile Users
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a crucial alert warning the public about a rising trend in fraudulent activities where scammers impersonate TRAI officials. These individuals are contacting unsuspecting citizens, falsely claiming that their mobile numbers are involved in illegal activities. The scammers demand Aadhaar numbers under the pretext of identity verification to prevent the alleged disconnection of mobile numbers.
Clarification from TRAI: No Disconnection Threats
TRAI has emphatically clarified that it does not have the authority to block or disconnect individual mobile numbers. The regulatory body does not initiate messages or calls for the disconnection of mobile numbers. The public is urged to be cautious and informed that any call or message claiming to be from TRAI in this context is potentially fraudulent.
Illegitimate Calls and Messages: A Serious Offense
Highlighting the severity of these fraudulent activities, TRAI has stressed that it has not authorized any agency to contact customers for disconnection-related matters. All such calls are deemed illegal and should be addressed according to the law. The public is advised to exercise caution and refrain from sharing personal information, including Aadhaar numbers, with unauthorized individuals or agencies.
Report Suspicious Activity: Collaborate Against Scams
In response to potential threats, TRAI encourages the public to report any suspicious calls or messages promptly. Citizens are advised to reach out to their service providers or utilize the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Additionally, a dedicated Cyber Crime Helpline Number (1930) is provided for immediate assistance.
