RANCHI: In a heartbreaking incident, over 8,000 lifeless fish were discovered in the serene waters of the Getalsud dam in Ranchi. This unsettling discovery has prompted the fisheries department to launch a thorough investigation, as it remains imperative to unveil the mysterious circumstances that led to this aquatic catastrophe.
Uncovering the Gruesome Scene
Fish, ranging from 500 grams to 1 kilogram in weight, were found lifeless within four submerged cages initially designed for nurturing them in the Getalsud dam. This alarming revelation sent shockwaves through the local community and the fisheries department alike. District fishery officer Arup Kumar Chaudhary shared his concern, stating that these tragic events have left both the department and the local population perplexed.
Minister’s Orders for a Swift Probe
The gravity of the situation did not escape the notice of State Agriculture Minister Badal Patralekh, who promptly issued an order for a comprehensive investigation on a fateful Saturday evening. Badal demonstrated his commitment to solving this mystery by instructing the department secretary to initiate a thorough probe on the ensuing Sunday. The urgency to ascertain the truth behind this mass fish mortality is evident, as the minister expects a swift report.
Searching for Answers
As the investigation unfolds, Chaudhary and his dedicated team are set to visit the dam, determined to unearth the underlying causes behind this tragic event. Various hypotheses have been put forth, ranging from oxygen deprivation to potential diseases or pollution in the water. Chaudhary acknowledged these possibilities, saying, “There might be several reasons for the death of fish such as lack of oxygen, diseases, or pollution. We suspect a lack of oxygen or disease could be the reason for the death of these fish. However, the exact cause could be ascertained only after we finish our probe.”
Oxygen Levels: A Vital Clue
One vital aspect of the investigation revolves around the critical levels of oxygen in the water. Chaudhary revealed that, ideally, the oxygen level in water should be five milligrams per liter or higher for the survival of fish. When this level dips below three milligrams per liter, it becomes a perilous zone for fish, often leading to their untimely demise. Understanding this crucial parameter will be pivotal in solving the mystery surrounding the mass fish deaths.
The Silver Lining
Despite the tragic incident, Chaudhary reassured the community that approximately 300 fish cages in the Maheshpur area, adjacent to the incident site, continue to operate safely. Over one and a half tonnes of fish are being reared there, and the fisheries department is taking every precaution to ensure their well-being.
