Thailand Replaces WTO Ambassador Following India’s Objections to Rice Program Comments
Thailand has replaced its Ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Pimchanok Vonkorpon Pitfield, following strong objections from India. India lodged a protest over Pitfield’s remarks at the WTO, where she accused India of using subsidized rice from public distribution systems to capture the export market. India termed the comments as ridiculing its public stockholding program.
Pitfield will be replaced by Thailand’s Foreign Secretary. India had sought a solution to the issue of subsidy caps, arguing that the current calculation based on 1986-88 prices is outdated. India contends that its rice procurement for the food program has breached the permitted level of support.
At the ongoing 13th Ministerial Conference of the WTO in Abu Dhabi, India stressed the importance of all policy options for WTO members to promote digital industrialization. India highlighted the dominance of a few firms from developed countries in the global e-commerce landscape, emphasizing the digital gap between developed and developing nations.
The 13th Ministerial Conference aims to discuss and deliberate upon global trade rules, with the closing session extended for further discussions on a package of agreements for adoption at the conference. The WTO, with 166 member countries, remains a critical global trade watchdog.
