Tensions Escalate in West Bengal as Sadhus Face Mob Attack, Triggering BJP-TMC Clash
A recent incident in West Bengal has sparked tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) after a group of sadhus was targeted by a mob. Twelve individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack, which occurred as the sadhus were en route to Gangasagar, a revered pilgrimage site.
The sadhus, covered in ash, approached a group of women for directions, leading to alarm and a subsequent mob attack. Despite videos of the incident going viral, police officials deny any communal angle, emphasizing that their prompt response rescued the sadhus and ensured their onward journey.
The BJP has criticized the TMC, accusing them of a breakdown in law and order. Several BJP leaders, including Locket Chatterjee, BJP MP from Hooghly, condemned the alleged attack on social media. Chatterjee highlighted concerns about deteriorating safety under the TMC, referencing a broader issue for Hindus in Bengal.
Officials report that the sadhus were repeatedly offered the opportunity to file a complaint, but they declined. Soumen Beltharia, Trinamool Congress District President in Purulia, assured that the incident is under investigation, and the truth will be revealed soon. He acknowledged the regrettable nature of the incident, attributing it to rumors that led to the mob targeting the sadhus.
As the political blame game intensifies, the focus remains on the safety of religious practitioners and the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack on the sadhus.
