Ten Newborns Die in Jhansi NICU Fire, Rescue Operations Underway
A devastating fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday night, claiming the lives of ten newborns. Chaos erupted in the ward as the fire started at around 10:30 p.m., reportedly due to a short circuit. Staff and bystanders scrambled to save as many babies as possible.
Rescue teams, along with fire brigade vehicles, rushed to the scene immediately after the incident was reported. The situation was dire, prompting responders to break windows to evacuate children. District Magistrate Avinash Kumar explained that the NICU is divided into two sections: an inner unit for critically ill babies and an outer unit for less critical cases. While most children in the outer unit were rescued, several in the inner unit could not be saved.
The injured are receiving treatment, and an investigation has been launched. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, praying for the peace of the deceased and directing officials to conduct relief and rescue operations on a war footing. An inquiry committee, led by the Commissioner and DIG, has been formed to determine the cause of the fire, with a report to be submitted to the Chief Minister.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities working to ensure no further casualties occur.
