Telangana Assembly Elections: Voters Turn Out Amid Tight Security
Polling for 119 Assembly constituencies in Telangana commenced with voters lining up to cast their ballots. The elections see a total of 2,290 candidates, including 221 women and one transgender candidate, representing 109 national and regional parties. The fate of these candidates, including 103 re-contesting legislators, mostly from the ruling Bharat Rasthra Samithi (BRS), will be decided by 3.17 crore voters. Polling stations across the state number 35,655.
Telangana as a Crucial Election State
This election in Telangana is part of a larger set of state elections, alongside Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Mizoram. It’s seen as a significant precursor to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The counting of votes for all five states will take place on Sunday, with live updates being provided.
Celebrity Participation and Security Arrangements
Several notable figures, including actors Rana Daggubati, Naga Chaitanya, Meka Srikanth, Nagarjuna, and Chiranjeevi, have been spotted at various polling stations. In addition to the celebrity turnout, significant security measures are in place, with over 2.5 lakh staff engaged in poll duties and 77,000 security personnel deployed. For the first time, Telangana is providing a home voting facility for persons with disabilities and voters above 80 years.
The Telangana Assembly elections are a crucial moment for the state, with parties like the BJP and Congress vying to challenge BRS’s dominance. The participation of various parties, including AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi, adds to the election’s dynamic nature.
