Tata Group to Build Massive iPhone Assembly Plant in Southern India

Conglomerate Tata Group is set to establish one of India’s largest iPhone assembly plants, aligning with Apple Inc.’s strategy to boost manufacturing in the country. The proposed facility is earmarked for construction in Hosur, located in the southern Tamil Nadu state.

Sources indicate that the plant may feature around 20 assembly lines, providing employment for approximately 50,000 workers within the next two years. The timeline aims for the site to become operational within 12 to 18 months.

This initiative aligns with Apple’s objective to localize its supply chain and further solidify its partnership with Tata. Currently, Tata owns an iPhone factory in Karnataka, acquired from Wistron Corp.

The forthcoming plant in Hosur will enhance Apple’s efforts to diversify its operations away from China, as the tech giant collaborates with manufacturing partners in India, Thailand, Malaysia, and other regions.

While both Apple and Tata declined to comment on the development, the Indian conglomerate has taken additional steps to boost its association with Apple.

Tata has increased hiring at its existing Hosur facility, where it produces iPhone enclosures. Moreover, the conglomerate plans to launch 100 retail stores focused on Apple products.

Simultaneously, Apple is expanding its retail footprint in India, having opened two stores with three more in the pipeline.

The move comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s production-linked subsidies, encouraging Apple’s key suppliers like Foxconn Technology Group and Pegatron Corp. to escalate operations in India.

This initiative resulted in Apple assembling over $7 billion worth of iPhones in India in the previous fiscal year, elevating the country’s share in the device’s production to approximately 7%.

The proposed Hosur plant is poised to be mid-sized in comparison to global iPhone factories, surpassing Tata’s existing Wistron-acquired facility.

Both Apple and Tata are likely to seek government subsidies for the new factory, coinciding with the expiration of previous state-backed financial incentives.
