Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence has reported increased activity by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) near the Taiwan Strait, with 18 Chinese aircraft and 8 People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels detected as of 6 am local time today. Six of these aircraft breached the median line, entering Taiwan’s southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ), prompting a close response from Taiwan’s military.
While the Ministry did not specify the types of aircraft or vessels involved, it assured that the situation is under close surveillance. Incursions into Taiwan’s ADIZ by PLA aircraft and vessels are common but have recently escalated, reflecting ongoing geopolitical tensions between Taiwan and China. The Taiwan Strait, which separates Taiwan from mainland China, has been a frequent area of contention, with Beijing asserting sovereignty over Taiwan.
This latest incident comes amid heightened regional security concerns. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence remains on high alert, prepared to respond to any further escalations.
Amid these growing threats, Taiwan began its own military exercises on Monday to test its war-fighting capabilities. The five-day drill coincides with a record number of PLA aircraft flying close to the island this month. Beijing has also increased the presence of its naval and coast guard vessels near the self-governed island, which it views as part of its territory. These manoeuvres are seen as part of Beijing’s ongoing pressure campaign against Taiwan.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence continues to monitor the situation closely, maintaining vigilance to safeguard its airspace and territorial integrity against Chinese military activities.
