T20 World Cup: Pakistan Eliminated After USA vs Ireland Match Cancellation
Key Highlights:
- USA vs Ireland match cancellation eliminates Pakistan from T20 World Cup.
- Pakistan’s poor performance and loss to the USA contributed to their exit.
- Ireland’s hopes for Super 8s also dashed by the washout in Florida.
The USA vs Ireland match was cancelled on Friday due to an unplayable wet outfield, resulting in Pakistan, the last edition’s runners-up, being officially eliminated from this year’s T20 World Cup.
With both teams receiving one point from the washout, the USA reached a total of five points, securing their place in the Super 8s. Even if Pakistan wins their match against Ireland on Sunday, they can only reach a maximum of four points, insufficient for advancement.
For Pakistan to qualify, they needed the USA vs Ireland match to occur and for Ireland to win, giving Pakistan a chance to beat Ireland and advance. However, the weather intervened, and Babar Azam’s team was eliminated.
Kamran Akmal expressed his disappointment, stating it is very disappointing and sad that the Pakistan team could not reach the Super Eight. He acknowledged the bitter fact that the team played below-average cricket and emphasized that it is now time to rectify the problems.
Wasim Jaffer also reacted, saying that contrary to popular belief, Pakistan wasn’t knocked out because the USA vs Ireland match was rained off, but because Pakistan lost to the USA.
Cricket Ireland reacted to the washout with a tweet stating that their hopes of reaching the Super 8s were dashed by the weather in Florida, as the game was abandoned without a ball being bowled. They expressed their disappointment but resolved to try again for the final time on Sunday.
