Supreme Court to Hear Pleas on Maharashtra Assembly Speaker’s Action
The Supreme Court is set to hear pleas from two factions within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra, with one faction led by Sharad Pawar and the other by Ajit Pawar, both seeking directions regarding disqualification actions. A bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra scheduled the hearing for October 13.
The first faction, led by Sharad Pawar, has called for Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar to take action against rebel MLAs led by Ajit Pawar. The second faction, represented by Ajit Pawar, argues that the petition is misleading, as the latest disqualification petition was filed only in early September. However, Sharad Pawar’s group contends that the initial petition was filed on July 2, and no progress has been made on it.
In July, Sharad Pawar’s faction filed disqualification petitions against 40 MLAs for anti-party activities after Ajit Pawar split from the party and joined the Maharashtra coalition government as Deputy Chief Minister. The petitions requested that the Speaker expedite the adjudication of the disqualification cases.
The Supreme Court had previously instructed the Speaker to fast-track the adjudication of disqualification petitions against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the MLAs who supported him during the 2022 rebellion. The Court instructed the Speaker to begin hearing the petitions within a week and establish a timetable for their resolution.
This upcoming hearing will address these related pleas from both NCP factions and is expected to provide clarity on the progress and actions regarding the disqualification petitions.
