Supreme Court Summons Patanjali Ayurved MD and Yog Guru Ramdev

The Supreme Court directed Patanjali Ayurved Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna and Yog Guru Ramdev to appear before it on the next hearing date for not responding to a show cause notice in contempt proceedings over misleading advertisements by Patanjali Ayurved.

Court’s Strong Reaction

The bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah expressed displeasure as Patanjali Ayurved failed to respond to the earlier show cause notice in contempt proceedings. The court took a stern stance against the company for its non-compliance.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi questioned the summoning of Ramdev. However, the court advised him to raise all contentions during the next hearing.

Background and Previous Proceedings

In the previous hearing, the court issued a notice to Patanjali Ayurved, seeking an explanation for its misleading advertisements. The court observed that the company prima facie violated its order cautioning against such advertisements in November 2023. The order restrained Patanjali Ayurved from advertising products claiming to treat diseases and cautioned against making statements against any system of medicine.

Indian Medical Association’s Petition

The case originated from a plea by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), seeking guidelines to prohibit false and misleading advertisements about Allopathy and Modern Medicine. The IMA, representing over 3,30,000 medical doctors across India, raised concerns about campaigns spreading misinformation against modern medicine.

Relief Sought by IMA

In its petition, the IMA urged the court to direct immediate and strict action against Patanjali Ayurved for violating laws related to advertisements, including the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, the Drugs & Cosmetics Rules, 1945, and the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The plea highlighted Patanjali’s alleged illegal claims made through nationwide advertisements.
