Suicide Attack Near Checkpost In Bhakkar -Pakistan Kills 2 Police Personnel

A suicide blast near a police checkpost in Pakistan’s Bhakkar district on Tuesday evening killed two police personnel and injured four others, officials said.

The explosion occurred around 7 pm near the bridge linking Dera Ismail Khan with Punjab province. The injured officers were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

According to local media reports, the suicide bomber detonated explosives close to the checkpost while police were conducting a search operation in the area to maintain law and order.

Bhakkar District Police Officer Shahzad Rafiq told Dawn that the attacker approached the checkpost and blew himself up during the ongoing operation. CCTV footage reportedly showed a man wearing a black shawl walking briskly toward the checkpoint moments before the explosion.

Highway Shut, Security On High Alert

Following the blast, authorities shut the road near the Dera Darya Khan bridge and suspended traffic as a precaution. A search operation was launched in surrounding areas, while security was heightened in both Bhakkar and Dera Ismail Khan. The main highway connecting Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces remained closed on Wednesday.

A lesser-known extremist outfit, Ansar al Islam Pakistan, affiliated with Ittehadul Mujahideen Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that a suicide bomber identified as Abu Darda carried it out.

In recent years, militant violence has surged in Pakistan, with many attacks attributed to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and outlawed Baloch separatist groups. The TTP, while separate from Afghanistan’s Taliban, is considered closely aligned with them. Islamabad has accused the group of operating from Afghan territory — an allegation both the TTP and Kabul have denied.
