Spain And Portugal Power Outage: Emergency Meetings Underway To Find Out the Cause
VoM News
Spain and Portugal faced a huge but rare power outage, affecting each sector of the economic coach. As per reports, traffic, grounding lights, water supplies, and banking sectors were badly affected.
Some were trapped inside lifts and elevators; some were buzzing inside ATMs as screens turned black.
Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, Madrid Mayor, took to microblogging platform X and urged the residents to minimize their journeys and stay where they were, adding: “It is essential that the emergency services can circulate.”
Whereas, in Portugal, reports have come that water supplies have also seen disruptions. As the situation grows, people were seen in queues waiting to restore essential commodities.
This huge power outage is a concern as such outages are extremely rare in Europe. The chances of a cyberattack are also being checked.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also addressed the nation and stated that they still do not have any conclusive details on these power cuts and also denied any civil protection problems or insecurity.
Both countries’ governments convened an emergency cabinet meeting as officials are trying to find out the exact cause of this rare, huge power outage. The National Security Council is likely to meet in the evening to take stock of the situation.
As parts of France also suffered a brief outage, RTE – the French grid operator – moved to supplement power to some parts of northern Spain after the power haltage.
This incident further reminds of the power outage that hit France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, and as far as Morocco in 2006.
