Soldier Martyred in Fierce Gun Battle with Terrorists in Udhampur
A soldier was martyred in action during a fierce gun battle with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, official sources said. The encounter took place last evening after the army launched an intelligence-based operation in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur โ a mountainous tri-junction connecting Udhampur, Doda, and Kathua districts in the Jammu region.
The terrorists were believed to be trained in jungle warfare. Basantgarh has witnessed frequent face-offs between terrorists and security forces.
This marks the second major encounter in Jammu and Kashmir in the last two weeks. Earlier, two soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer of the army, were martyred during a gun battle in Kulgam district. According to the army, two terrorists were neutralized in the encounter.
The GOC, White Knight Corps, along with all ranks, paid a solemn tribute to Lance Dafadar Baldev Chand, who made the supreme sacrifice during an ongoing operation at Kanji, Udhampur on the night of 19-20 September 2025.
The Indian Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family in this hour of grief.

Jammu region, once largely free from terrorism, has become a significant security challenge over the last four years. With increased activity from battle-hardened terrorists, the government has reinforced the counter-terrorism grid by deploying thousands of additional troops and paramilitary personnel in the region.
