Snow Blankets Himachal Pradesh, Delighting Residents and Farmers
Moderate to heavy snowfall continued in high hills and tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday. Shimla, the state capital, witnessed its first snowfall of the season, bringing joy to residents, tourists, and farmers. The 5-km stretch between Kufri and Fagu transformed into a winter wonderland, attracting visitors to popular spots like the Mall Road and Ridge in Shimla.
Disruptions and Relief:
Over 240 roads, including six national highways, have been closed due to heavy snowfall and rain, impacting vehicular traffic. The state emergency operation center reported disruptions to 677 transformers. However, the forecasted heavy snowfall brings relief to farmers and fruit growers who faced significant crop losses during the dry spell, anticipating benefits for Rabi crops.
Tourism Optimism:
The snowfall is not only a visual treat for tourists but also a crucial factor for the tourism and allied industry. Stakeholders express optimism for an improved season, hoping for increased footfall during February weekends in Shimla and other tourist destinations. The wet spell is seen as a positive turn for the region after experiencing the driest January in 2022 and significant rain deficits in December 2023.
The MeT predicts a continuation of the wet spell until February 5, bringing multiple spells of heavy rain or snowfall in various districts. Despite the joyous occasion, there is a cautionary note about potential disruptions in essential services and reduced visibility due to the snowfall.
