In Golaghat district, Assam, a dramatic encounter unfolded resulting in the death of Dilip Sahani, alias Lagan Sahani, a suspected serial thief involved in numerous theft cases, stated Golaghat Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajen Singh.

According to reports, Sahani was apprehended by Dergaon police on Saturday, along with stolen articles. Subsequently, while leading the police team to the location where he had hidden more stolen goods, Sahani allegedly attempted to escape. In a desperate move, he produced a 7.65mm pistol from the stolen items and fired at the police.

The law enforcement team responded swiftly to the attack. During the exchange of fire, Sahani sustained bullet injuries. Despite immediate medical attention at Dergaon Community Health Centre, he succumbed to his injuries, confirmed the SP.

Recovered from Sahani was an Italian-made 7.65mm pistol along with two empty cases of 7.65mm live ammunition. The accused, known for creating fear due to his involvement in numerous thefts, had reportedly participated in over 10 such cases within the last few months.

SP Singh highlighted the collaboration between the police and local sources that led to Sahani’s capture. The encounter occurred when the team arrived at an abandoned site around 10:45 pm, expecting to recover the stolen items. Instead, Sahani brandished the firearm, prompting the police to retaliate in self-defence and protect public property.

The investigation continues, aiming to recover all stolen items associated with Sahani’s alleged criminal activities, as stated by the Golaghat SP.
