SC Collegium Recommends Five Names for Additional Judgeships in High Courts
Under the leadership of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the Supreme Court collegium has put forth a list of recommendations to the Centre for the appointment of additional judges in various high courts. The collegium, comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai, suggested the names of additional judges Justices Rahul Bharti and Moksha Khajuria Kazmi from the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court for appointment as permanent judges.
Additionally, one of the recommendations included the consideration of additional judge Justice Abhay Ahuja for a permanent judge position in the Bombay High Court. The details of these recommendations were shared in several resolutions uploaded on the Supreme Court’s website on Thursday night.
One of the resolutions mentioned the recommendation of Smt. Chaitali Chatterjee (Das), a judicial officer, for the position of Judge in the High Court at Calcutta. It also proposed the appointment of Arvind Kumar Verma, a judicial officer, as a judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh. Furthermore, the collegium urged the Centre to contemplate the appointment of Rohit Kapoor, an advocate, as a judge of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana.
Moreover, the recommendations also included the names of Ms Shamima Jahan, an advocate, and Ms Yarenjungla Longkumer, a Judicial Officer, for appointment as Judges of the Gauhati High Court. In ensuring the order of seniority, the collegium emphasized that Harmeet Singh Grewal and Deepinder Singh Nalwa, whose names were previously approved by the Collegium on October 17, 2023, should take precedence in the appointment over Shri Rohit Kapoor.
In the process of arriving at these recommendations, the collegium sought guidance from consultee top court judges, considered inputs from respective governments, and evaluated the professional competence of the candidates in question before making these recommendations for judgeships in the high courts.
