Samsung Unveils Foldable Flex In & Out Screen at CES 2024, Redefining Smartphone Design
Samsung showcased its cutting-edge foldable screen technology, named ‘Flex In & Out,’ during CES 2024, offering a glimpse into the future of clamshell-style foldable smartphones. Unlike traditional flip phones, this innovative device not only opens and closes but also folds backward, thanks to its 360-degree folding display. The South Korean tech giant asserts that this unique feature eliminates the need for an external display, as users can access information on the inner screen even when the device is folded shut.
The ‘Flex In & Out’ concept device, resembling the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in form factor, took center stage at CES 2024. In contrast to Samsung’s previous clamshell-style foldable phone with an external display, this smartphone stands out by enabling both forward and backward folding, providing a novel user experience. The 360-degree folding display ensures continuous interaction with the screen, even in the folded state.
Samsung emphasizes the durability of the foldable device panels, subjecting them to rigorous testing. The company claims to have folded the panels in extreme temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius. Additional tests involved rubbing the panels with sand, immersing them in water, and bouncing basketballs on them to ensure robustness.
As of now, Samsung has not disclosed any plans to incorporate the ‘Flex In & Out’ display technology into a future Galaxy Z Flip smartphone. However, the potential integration of a folding phone with a single display could simplify the user experience by eliminating the need for a separate outer display configuration, potentially enabling more apps to be used when the device is folded shut.
In addition to the ‘Flex In & Out’ display, Samsung showcased other groundbreaking concepts at CES 2024, including the Rollable Flex display. This scroll-like screen technology, first demonstrated in May 2023, allows expansion up to five times its original size. Anticipated to go into mass production in 2025, bezel-less Rollable Flex smartphones could hit the market as early as the following year, offering users a revolutionary and flexible display experience.
