Saket District Court Sentencing Deferred Amid Documentation Delays

In a recent turn of events, the Saket District Court has postponed the sentencing arguments in a high-profile criminal case due to incomplete legal procedures. The delay was prompted by the non-receipt of convict affidavit verification reports from the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DLSA). This has led to a directive from Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Ravindra Kumar Pandey for the reports to be promptly filed before the next scheduled hearing.

Legal Formalities Cause Setback in Sentencing Process

The administration of justice faced a procedural hiccup when the court was informed that the DLSA had not yet provided the verification report for the affidavits of the convicted individuals. ASJ Pandey noted that the process requires at least a week to be completed, pushing the timeline for the final sentencing arguments to the next court date. The court has duly listed November 24, 2023, as the day for proceeding with the sentencing arguments.

Pre-Sentence and Victim Impact Reports on Record

Despite the delay in affidavit verification, the court has successfully filed the pre-sentence report, prepared by the appointed probation officer. Additionally, the victim impact report, a critical document reflecting the repercussions of the crime on the victims, has already been filed by the Secretary of the DLSA. These reports are essential to the court’s preparation for the sentencing phase of the trial.

Awaiting Closure in Notorious Crime Syndicate Case

The case in question involves four individuals—Ravi Kapoor, Ajay Kumar, Baljeet Malik, and Amit Shukla—convicted of murder and operating an organized crime ring under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). A fifth individual, Ajay Sethi, has been convicted on charges related to benefiting from the crime’s proceeds. The court is now awaiting the completion of all necessary legal documents before it can deliver the final sentence in this significant case.
