
Road Accidents in JK Claim 580 Lives and Leave 5,565 Injured in 2023
In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, a total of 4,165 accidents were reported up to August 2023, with tragic consequences for many. This article delves into the details of these accidents, highlighting the areas with the highest fatalities and injuries, along with a breakdown of the monthly statistics.
Fatalities and Injuries Breakdown
In this region, the year 2023 witnessed a significant number of road accidents, with 499 being fatal and 3,666 non-fatal. These accidents resulted in the loss of 580 lives and left 5,565 individuals injured. A stark contrast to the preceding year, 2022, which saw 6,092 accidents, leading to the tragic demise of 805 people and injuries to 8,372 others.
Districts with High Casualties
In Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu District had the highest number of fatalities up to August 2023, with 134 individuals losing their lives and 900 sustaining injuries. Kathua District followed closely with 58 fatalities and 476 injuries, while various incidents in the region claimed 43 lives, injuring 333 individuals.

Other High-Risk Districts
Anantnag District in South Kashmir reported 38 fatalities and 286 injuries. Udhampur District recorded 30 fatalities and a significant 498 injuries. Bordering Rajouri District witnessed 30 lives lost and 336 injuries. Samba District experienced 30 fatalities and 243 injuries, while Reasi District reported 29 casualties and 350 injuries. Poonch Town also had its share of tragedy with 13 fatalities and 200 injuries in the first eight months of 2023.
Mountainous Terrain Challenges
In the hilly terrain of Doda District, 23 people succumbed to road accidents, while 220 were injured up to August 2023. Kishtwar District reported 24 casualties and 96 injuries, while Ramban District recorded 21 fatalities and 217 injuries during the same period.
Monthly Breakdown
Examining the monthly breakdown of fatalities, May of this year had the highest number, with 94 individuals losing their lives, followed by 89 in July, 75 in March, 74 in June, 69 in August, 66 in February, 59 in April, and 54 in January of this year.
Traffic Violations and Enforcement
Regarding the number of traffic violations, City Srinagar, Rural Kashmir, City Jammu, Rural Jammu, and NHW Ramban police issued a total of 93,302 challans. This enforcement effort intensified with 105,117 challans in February, 126,923 in March, 102,878 in April, and 142,206 in May, reflecting a proactive approach to road safety in the region.
